As outlined in the Powers of the Board of Governors as defined in The Lakehead University Act, 1965, the Board of Governors is responsible for the fiscal management of the University and for the appointment and evaluation of the President.
The Board of Governors meets six times a year. Members of the community, faculty, Aboriginal Management Council, students, staff and alumni participate on the Board of Governors.
The Board of Governors conducts its work through ten standing committees and an Executive Committee.
